안녕 Junhyeok – I’ll miss you – Day6

day 6 2

One of the downsides of being a passionate fangirl/fanboy on virtually any topic or thing is the potential for upset and disappointment. Whilst most of the time, ‘stanning’ something is an exciting experience and you spend most of your time anxiously checking for updates and information, tour dates, new albums, new series, and starring lovingly at images or words that make you swoon, there is always a chance that you will wake up one morning to some of the most disappointing news you’ve seen in a long while. And the worst part? That painful clenching of your chest as you realise that something entirely out of your control and beyond the expected has happened. Sometimes it’s something simple, a change of tour dates, a rewrite of a script, but occasionally it is something much more significant and fandom changing. Sometimes the disappointment is focused on the subject itself, whilst, more often I find, the disappointment is directed at the demographic of fans, your peers, my peers, though in this case our thinking is so different I’m not sure I would classify these fans as peers at all.

As I’m sure anyone reading this has already guessed, there is a particular piece of news which has triggered this post (though it’s not the only cause of irritation for me in the last week, but that’s a story for later). I read the news last night and went to bed in a state of shock, hoping that my flu-addled mind had read it incorrectly. Junhyeok, keyboardist and vocalist of Day6 has left the band for ‘personal reasons’, terminating his contract with JYPEntertainment after only 5 months and one mini album. Junhyeok; with his strong, distinctive, almost angelic voice and keen command of Day6’s keyboard requirements. When I woke up this morning to find that the news was in no way fabricated I couldn’t stop myself from writing this post.

yunhyeok 2 For every fan like myself who harbours only positivity for their subject(s) of choice, it can be difficult to understand the perspective of an anti-fan or an angered fan, especially one who would go so far as to take negative steps against their subject of adoration. Naturally, there have been occasions where someone I’m a fan of has done something that I highly disapprove of (of course there have because they’re people too) but these things should be looked at in context. Of course speculation is rife on the cause of Junhyeok’s departure and I try to avoid believing the majority of it as the Internet can be a scarily inaccurate place, the thing that has bothered me is the sheer volume of the continued negativity that should really have been knocked on its head the very moment it hit the Internet.

Whilst I do not know the ins and outs, none of us can claim to, I am deeply saddened to hear of the abuse and harassment suffered by Junhyeok at a time when he needed the support of his fans the most. We’re all guilty of making mistakes, so why people place an idol on such a pedestal and hold them to a standard so much higher and practically impossible to meet I fail to understand. Whilst I understand that these are role models and they are in the public eye, to some extent seeing them make mistakes makes them more human and, in my opinion, enforces the holes in the ridiculous premise that perfection is something that is even conceivable, after all the world is perfect in its imperfection. Perhaps this is because I am a ‘누나’ Noona fan, or perhaps I’ve seen enough of the world now and made enough of my own silly mistakes, but I don’t see what could warrant the treatment that Junhyeok received.

I’m sure I don’t stand alone when I say that the image of Junhyeok holding back tears during his final performance with Day6 is going to remain firmly etched into my heart and is not something I will easily forget. I hope that those who have failed to recognise that these young men are people, not commodities for enjoyment, will be haunted by these images as well, as is fitting for the crime.

yunhyeok
Junhyeok, a beautiful, talented and sweetly sensitive person, is taking a big step, leaving behind the comfort of his brothers. I really can not wish him more happiness and success than I am right now. I just hope he won’t let this stand in the way of pursuing his dream, I know I will be missing the sound of his voice from now on, a voice I fell in love with almost immediately upon Day6’s debut! I hope to hear him again in some capacity, the world shouldn’t have to miss out on his talent because of youth and its naivety.

Junhyeok Hwaiting! Day6 Hwaiting! Sundays Hwaiting!

IMFACT – Debut EP ‘Lollipop’ Review

Lollipop

You’ve probably already guessed based on the fact that this is my third ‘IMFACT’ post that they’ve had a bit of an impact on me. This EP is probably the musical incarnation of the phrase ‘Short and Sweet’. At only 4 tracks long it definitely knows how to leave it’s audience wanting more without leaving them feeling unsatisfied. With most of the members taking an active role in the writing and composing of all of the songs this feels like a love letter from ‘IMFACT’ to their fans and you can really feel how much work has gone into it. This band boasts some wonderfully talented young men. Continue reading

IMFACT – Lollipop Teasers and M/V

imfact lollipop(left to right: Taeho, Jeup, Sang, Ungjae, Jian(on floor))

With ‘IMFACT’s debut EP just around the corner, Star Empire began to release trailers for the title track ‘Lollipop’ and these teasers definitely served their purpose as they got me really riled up and excited for the 27th January 2016.

Leadng the pack for ‘Lollipop’s’ individual teasers comes Sang! Once again showcasing some fancy finger-work with his guitar, Sang performs a short acoustic to applause from a bubblegum haired Ungjae, wooing women worldwide with his talents. The teaser is set in a classroom with Sang sitting in the window performing to an empty room. The teaser is naturally lit, bright and airy and the music is dreamlike and sweet.

Happy Virus Rappers -The Cure For Everything That Ails Me

inspirational chanyeol

Rap is an interesting new discovery for me, as are rappers. Previous to my endless excursion in to the world of Kpop I hadn’t ever really had much of an interest in rap or hip-hop and as such wasn’t aware of any rappers (bar the well known American rappers like Jay-Z etc…) In its essence, Rap challenges authority and is often an angry medium which is used to break down societal walls and (let’s be honest) it has a reputation for glorifying some values which definitely don’t fit with my personal opinions. It wasn’t until last summer, in fact, when YouTube kindly introduced me to BTS, that I really began to enjoy rap as a medium and, in time, began to take an interest in other Korean idol rappers.

Needless to say, now I am obsessed and have collected my own little batch of favourites who I excitedly gush over at every opportunity. There is one particular type of rapper that I have an indescribable weakness for and these lovely guys rock my morning playlist with their clever (often emotional) vocal gymnastics whilst simultaneously making my evenings much more enjoyable by being, quite simply, among some of the sweetest and funniest men alive. So, in no particular order, lets meet some of the ‘happy virus rappers’ who can have me smiling without even saying a word!

J-Hope

It only makes sense to start where it all begun for me, J-Hope from BTS! Whilst Rap Monster is delightfully awkward but boasts an incredible intelligence and confidence and Suga is full of a swag and emotional depth that is almost too much to comprehend, J-Hope is working an entirely different but equally prudent corner of emotions. A look at his carefree smile and loud and proud behaviour would make you think he’d never suffered a hardship in his young life but you’d be totally incorrect. Continue reading

Seventeen (세븐틴) – DK (Dokyeom) Profile

dk

Name – DK – Dokyeom – 도겸

Birth Name – Lee Seokmin – 이석민

D.O.B – February 18, 1997

Unit – Vocal Unit

Position – Main Vocalist

Nickname – Mr. Hat, Soonseok Talk, Rockstar, Docutie

Height – 179 cm

Home Town – Suji-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea

DK is Seventeen’s resident ‘Happy Virus’. He has revealed in interviews that he wishes to become someone who has a positive effect on the people around him, he wants to be able to help them and give them hope. With these noble intentions in mind, DK is almost always smiling and joking and he approaches every situation with unfathomable optimism and enthusiasm. A very funny guy, DK is one third of Seventeen’s famous ‘Gag Trio’ alongside Hoshi and Seungkwan, proving himself to be incredibly comfortable in front of the camera by making even the simplest things hysterically funny.

DK is not just one of the happiest and funniest members of Seventeen but he is also the most outgoing and is able to make a relationship with absolutely anyone. Despite being the last member to join the group he was able to get on with all of his fellow members quickly and easily. In a poll they all voted him as the funniest member.

Now, before you start to think that DK doesn’t take his music very seriously, let me tell you categorically and without a doubt, that there is nothing in this world that is more important to DK than his singing. He practices even when he is resting and has been known to get upset and cry when he thinks he isn’t doing well enough. Diligent, hard-working and overwhelmingly talented despite only just having become an adult, DK is absolute ‘Shining Diamond’.

Picking him out from the crowd

Here’s the fun bit! Anyone who is  a fan of k-pop knows that there is simply no point in using a hair style or make up style to try and identify a member as they change them like they change their clothes so I will focus on facial features and give you a quick run down of his outfits from a couple of M/Vs / performances to make it a little easier for you to find the happiest man on earth amongst his bandmates in future.

Seventeen (세븐틴) – Joshua Profile

joshua

Name – Joshua – 조슈아

Birth Name – Hong Jisoo – 홍지수

D.O.B – December 30, 1995

Unit – Vocal Unit

Position – Main Vocalist

Nickname – Gentleman Joshua, American Hyung

Height – 177 cm

Home Town – Los Angeles, California, U.S.A

I really can’t think of a more apt word to describe Joshua except for ‘Gentleman’. He has a very calm and mature aura despite being barely an adult. Cool and collected and ever composed, Joshua is softly spoken and extremely polite and difficult to provoke. It would be easy to overlook him in the wake of some of his louder bandmates but his ‘gentlemanly’ demeanour makes him seem confident and capable despite being in another country, miles away from his family.

Joshua (alongside Vernon) speaks fluent English, he grew up in America speaking English at school and Korean at home with his parents so he is conversational in both languages. He was originally approached by Pledis when performing at a talent show in America. He is a talented guitarist and it is no surprise that his soft, seemingly effortless voice attracted the attention of the talent-scouts.

Jeonghan is often described as Seventeen’s prince and there is no denying that, but I feel that Joshua has more than earned a chance at that title as well. His approach to interviews, fan-meetings and performing is very admirable and he handles even the most awkward situations with aplomb. Bravo, Joshua! I can’t sing his praises enough.

Seventeen (세븐틴) – Jeonghan Profile

jeonghan

Name – Jeonghan – 정한

Birth Name – Yoon Jeong Han – 윤정한

D.O.B – October 4th, 1995

Unit – Vocal Unit

Position – Main Vocalist, Face of the Group

Nickname – Eldest Maknae, 1004, Angel

Height – 178 cm

Home Town – Seoul, South Korea

I’ve heard it said many times before that many K-pop fans are manga and anime fans who have found out where the real-life anime characters live. This is quite possibly very true and the same can probably be said for fans of otome fans as well, but it wasn’t until I first saw Jeonghan that I realised just how true this statement is. Looking like a high school prince straight out of the pages of a manga, Jeonghan with his long hair and flawless features is as angelic as his nickname suggests.

When I first saw him I felt like I’d seen him before, it didn’t take me long to work out where I thought I’d seen him before and apparently I wasn’t the only person who had that thought seeing as I found these comparisons on google.

Please take a moment to appreciate just how much Jeonghan resembles Aya Kamiyama, a basketball player from an awesome and sweet manga called Haru Matsu Bokura.

Aside from being prettier than I could ever be, Jeonghan is one of the oldest in the group and, though he cares for his members unconditionally and looks after his younger brothers (DK especially) he is also known to be very playful earning him the nickname ‘Eldest Maknae’. Exceedingly modest, despite his angelic voice, Jeonghan is always aiming higher, he thinks he is one of the weakest in the group (though I entirely disagree, I don’t think there is a single weak member) and is determined to work harder for his team.

The other members have voted him as ‘best personality’ because of his friendly and funny nature, caring attitude and cheerful demeanour. Though sometimes he seems quiet he assures his fans that he isn’t always that way. Despite some of his more delicate traits and features, Jeonghan has very broad shoulders and is a keen sportsman.

Seventeen (세븐틴) – S.Coups Profile

s.coups debut

Name – S.Coups –  에스.쿱스

Birth Name – Choi Seung Cheol – 최승철

D.O.B – August 8, 1995

Unit – Hip-Hop Unit

Position – Leader, Hip-Hop Unit Leader, Main Rapper

Nickname – 17’s Father, Beagle King

Height – 178 cm

Home Town – Daegu, South Korea

S.Coups is the leader of the group. He is also the oldest and boasts the longest training period before debut (6 years) as it was initially planned that he would debut with Nu’est and then, later, Tempest. S.Coups is full of surprises, he is confident, strong and described by the other members as being the ‘manliest’ of them all, but he has also proven himself to be a very sensitive soul.

He carries a lot of responsibility on his shoulders as the group’s overall leader and is always striving to become a better hyung for his members. The moment I fell in love with Seungcheol was the first time I saw him crying because he was worried about his own ability to take care of his ‘kids’, ever since that moment I have harboured an adoration for this little ball of light who is so readily accepting responsibility for things that are above and beyond what he can control.

Despite his democratically voted title of ‘manliest’ S.Coups is also a king when it comes to aegyo! He is surprisingly mischievous and unexpectedly adorable when he opens up to his fans and members alike.

Seventeen (세븐틴) – Vernon Profile

vernon 3

Name – Vernon -버논

Birth Name – Hansol Vernon Chwe

D.O.B – February 18, 1998

Unit – Hip-Hop Unit

Position – Lead Rapper

Nickname – Mr. Headphones, Peacekeeper

Height – 175 cm

Home Town – New York, U.S.A

Vernon or Hansol is the only member of Seventeen who has one Caucasian parent. He was born in New York but moved to Korea when he was 5 years-old. His father is Korean and his mother is American this means he has more western compared with the others. Despite being incredibly young, Vernon has a wise head on his shoulders. On stage, Vernon is full of attitude and ‘swagger’ but behind closed doors and when confronted with a camera he can be a little more shy and reserved. A very valued member of the team, the very young Vernon is currently the Lead Rapper and proves his worth time and time again rapping in both English and Korean. He’s also a very capable dancer with a very natural sense of rhythm and style.

Now, this isn’t something you’d spot from just the M/Vs but my personal favourite thing about Vernon, and the thing that really makes him stand out in my eyes, is his cheerful demeanour and his ability to laugh at himself. Vernon loves to sing though he’s not the greatest singer (Much like myself), he does an incredible impersonation of Seungkwan (check out the ‘part switch’ videos) and he loves his members and loves to laugh. He has a slightly kooky sense of humour and sometimes does things or makes faces that you’re not expecting which adds to the enjoyment. It’s got to be a lot of fun working with this little piece of sunshine.
